ASIA-PACIFIC AIRLINES SEE PASSENGER DEMAND UP 27 PCT Y-O-Y IN MAY 2024 -- IATA

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 (Bernama) -- Asia-Pacific airlines saw a 27 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in passenger demand in May 2024, measured in revenue passenger kilometres, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In a statement today, IATA said Asia-Pacific airlines also saw their capacity, measured in available seat kilometres, increasing by 26 per cent y-o-y and the load factor rising to 81.6 per cent in May 2024 compared with May 2023. 

“This performance maintains Asian carriers as the largest contributor to industry-wide growth in May 2024, accounting for 42 per cent of the y-o-y increase,” it said.

Globally, IATA said passenger demand went up 10.7 per cent in May 2024 compared to May 2023, while total capacity was up 8.5 per cent y-o-y and load factor stood at 83.4 per cent in May 2024.

On the international front, it said passenger demand rose 14.6 per cent against May 2023, capacity was up 14.1 per cent y-o-y and the load factor improved to 82.8 per cent.

“Domestic demand rose 4.7 per cent compared with May 2023; capacity was up 0.1 per cent y-o-y and the load factor was at 84.5 per cent,” it said.
