KOTA BHARU, July 3 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Kelantan foiled an attempt to smuggle 550 litres of petrol in Kampung Pak Keral, Tumpat after a seven-kilometre car chase, yesterday.

State director Azman Ismail said the incident occurred at 5.50 pm when his team acted on intelligence about a Proton Preve car with a local license plate suspected of carrying petrol-filled jerry cans intended for smuggling into a neighbouring country.

He said that as the car was being inspected, the driver suddenly sped off towards Kampung Bunohan. The enforcement officers gave chase, and after seven kilometres the driver lost control and crashed into a tree.

"The suspect fled into a padi field and could not be located. We found several plastic jerry cans containing 550 litres of petrol in the passenger seats and car boot, valued at RM1,127.50," he said in a statement today.

He added that the total value of the seizure, including the car, is RM16,127.50, and the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
