PM ANWAR WANTS ECRL PROJECT EXPEDITED 

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) --  Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) to expedite the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

He said the project, spanning 665 kilometres, is essential for promoting balanced development in less developed areas, including in Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu.

“I have told CCCC and MRL to expedite the implementation of this project. We will provide all necessary support to ensure the rapid progress and success of the ECRL.

“We also seek assurances regarding contractors, consultants and suppliers from local companies, as well as appropriate Bumiputera participation,” he added.

Anwar said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the ECRL Gombak Integrated Terminal station here today, also attended by China’s Premier Li Qiang.

Anwar emphasised the government's commitment to hasten the implementation of the project to ensure more even development across less developed areas.

“The ECRL will promote growth in regions deemed less competitive and lacking in capability unless we provide sufficient infrastructure.... this will facilitate stronger economic growth in these regions,” he said.

The 665km ECRL starting from Kota Bharu and ending at Port Klang will involve 20 stations, including 10 passenger stations and 10 stations combining freight and passenger transport.

The mega infrastructure project, which serves as evidence of the strong bilateral relationship between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, is expected to be completed by late 2026.

Meanwhile, Anwar also urged the MRL and CCCC to ensure efficient management of the ECRL project without disrupting its progress.

“The Chief Secretary (to the Government) Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali (also MRL Chairman) met the CCCC and MRL yesterday to focus on the need to proceed and to start planning on the issue of operations and maintenance.

“One of the major flaws of these huge mega projects is the need to ensure that the maintenance of these projects is being done in an efficient manner...” he said.

The prime minister also thanked all parties who have helped expedite the project.

“I also wish to thank them for their efforts in training, technology transfer, and providing opportunities for local players to gain exposure to new technologies and enhance their capabilities. Once again, my thanks to all the professionals - engineers and technicians from both China and Malaysia.

“We leaders can plan, decide, and formulate policies, but it is committed professionals, technocrats and workers like you who have demonstrated that we can achieve goals more effectively and successfully,” he added.

Anwar also conveyed his appreciation to Premier Li, as both of them had extensive discussions covering numerous issues, including trade, investments, infrastructure, tourism, culture and education.

“I believe at the current pace, this comprehensive strategic partnership with China is something we applaud and will showcase how Malaysia and China can be great collaborators in economic fields and all aspects of human development,” he said.
