OVER 85,000 SEEDLINGS SOLD AT MAHA 2024

22/09/2024 07:33 PM

SERDANG, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Over 85,000 seedlings were sold during the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture, and Agrotourism (MAHA) 2024 exhibition, enough to utilise a total land area of 839 hectares.

Agriculture Department director-general Datuk Nor Sam Alwi said that the figure represented a 17 per cent increase compared to the sales value of seedlings at MAHA 2022.

“This includes sales from the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI),” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of MAHA 2024 today.

He noted that the seedlings sold included Musang King and Black Thorn durians, pearl rambutans, and cempedak, priced between RM15 and RM300 depending on the height of the plants.

“This indirectly reflects the public's trust in the country's agricultural agencies which encourages people to plant trees for their own use,” he said.

Meanwhile, Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) director-general Dr Akma Ngah Hamid  announced that Brahman cattle recorded orders valued at RM2.15 million, involving 310 cattle from the breed.

“We (the Veterinary Services Department) are actively promoting this Australian breed for farming in our country, as Brahman cattle are known for their high-quality beef,” he said.

Earlier, during a press conference, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for entrusting the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) with the organisation of the 100th edition of MAHA.

“I would also like to thank the KPKM staff and media personnel who worked tirelessly throughout the 12 days of MAHA 2024,” he said.

MAHA 2024, which concluded today, recorded an attendance of five million visitors by noon, exceeding the initial target of three million.

The biennial exhibition, held at the Malaysian Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS), has generated direct sales worth over RM41 million as of this morning.

MAHA 2024 also saw the signing of 139 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs) valued at RM7.2 billion.
