KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Internet of Things (IoT) Association has called on the government to continually update the newly launched national guidelines on Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics (AIGE) to ensure the use of AI technology remains safe and relevant.

Deputy president Datuk P. Sri Ganes, welcomed the launch of the new AIGE on Sept 20, describing it as a significant step toward creating an ethical and responsible AI environment.

He emphasised that it is crucial for the rapidly evolving AI landscape, which presents new challenges requiring different approaches and solutions.

"The rapid development of technology presents numerous unforeseen challenges. AI is a dynamic field that transcends physical boundaries," he said in a statement to Bernama.

He stressed that the government must pay particular attention to transparent and inclusive data-sharing practices.

"A data-sharing framework across various platforms must be transparent and inclusive to address any unintended consequences in AI applications," he explained.

During the launch on Sept 20, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the national guidelines on AIGE aimed to create a safe and ethical ecosystem for AI technology use, while also providing a framework for users, policymakers, and AI technology providers.

Sri Ganes also emphasised the importance of talent development in advancing AI technology in Malaysia and called for enhanced collaboration between the government, industry players, and academic institutions to ensure AI-driven innovations are fully utilised.

"All three components must work together to promote more innovation. Malaysia should not merely be a user but must produce more innovators across various sectors," he stated.

"These guidelines have laid a solid foundation, but we must be prepared to face new challenges so that the benefits of this technology can be enjoyed by all," he concluded.
