ZURICH TAGNIA CONDUCTING POC FOR MLFF ON WISE

23/09/2024 03:02 PM

KUALA KANGSAR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Highway information technology engineering company Zurich Tagnia Sdn Bhd (Zurich Tagnia) has begun to conduct proof of concept (POC) testing for the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) to be used on the West Ipoh Span Expressway (WISE).

Its director, Muhamad Abd Karim Ismail said the POC for the MLFF system has been installed at the Jerlun Interchange in Jalan Kuala Kangsar and been collecting data since February.

He said the MLFF POC also used a combination of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, and the test results showed 99 per cent accurate detection.

"The POC implementation through a real-scale MLFF gantry structure is to test and verify the efficiency of the MLFF gantry front-end system before it is implemented at WISE as stipulated in future highway operations,” he said in a press conference here last night.

"The tests involved have been carried out during the day and night, and even operates 24 hours a day like in the real situation as we want to identify and resolve all issues that can hinder the smooth implementation of the MLFF in the future."

Muhamad Abd Karim said the MLFF POC at the Jerlun Interchange detected an average of 4,652 vehicles daily when passing through the test site.

"There are two poles equipped with high-tech cameras, one to capture each angle of the vehicles and another, placed 100 metres (m) in front, to determine the specific class of vehicles passing by.

"As a technology player, we are confident that the MLFF system that is expected to be used in WISE  will give users a new experience when it is expected to be fully completed in 2028," he said.

He also said the MLFF system is in line with the government's ongoing efforts to improve transport infrastructure and ensure a smoother traffic flow as well as reduce congestion.

"So far we are one of the first to conduct this test and we are using international technology expertise from Germany, but the person who operates the system is a local,” he added.

"The data collected from this POC test will be shared with the relevant authorities and stakeholders."

MLFF provides a barrier-free highway toll experience and tolls will be collected electronically without the need for barriers or toll houses, similar to the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system in Singapore.

The 60 km-long WISE will be equipped with three two-way lanes, with the route starting in Gopeng through Batu Gajah, Siputeh, Manong, Tronoh, Beko, Seri Iskandar and then Kuala Kangsar.
