In a statement today, SMC said its chief executive officer Dr Seow Vei Ken emphasised the hospital's commitment to improving patient outcomes and quality of life through advanced cancer treatment and comprehensive care with the CSR radiotherapy programme.

“By offering affordable radiotherapy services and advanced treatment options, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients in Sarawak, ensuring they can focus on their recovery with dignity and peace of mind.

“Together, through collaborative efforts and community support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer in the Sarawak community and beyond," he said.

Inaugurated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Dr Seow, the event was also a collaboration with Junior Chamber International Kuching (JCI Kuching), Sunway Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Kuching as well as Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN).

The statement said according to the Malaysian National Cancer Registry 2012–2016, Sarawak was recorded as the state with the fifth highest cancer incidence rate, with 2,300 new cancer cases reported annually.

“The CSR Radiotherapy Programme is an initiative that demonstrates SMC’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and quality of life through advanced cancer treatment and comprehensive care,” it said.

Meanwhile, SMC medical expert Dr Toh Charng Jeng in the statement highlighted the advantages of minimally invasive surgery on cancer treatment.

Dr Toh who is a Consultant Neurosurgeon, Spine and Interventional Pain Specialist said by utilising advanced technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques, medical teams could achieve precise targeting of affected areas with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.

“This approach not only improves patient outcomes but also enhances their overall quality of life by allowing for quicker returns to daily activities and reducing the risks associated with traditional open surgeries,” he said.

Apart from that, Clinical Oncologist Dr Ivan Shew in his talk said that innovative cancer treatments were revolutionising oncology by providing more effective and personalised care.

“Advanced technologies like targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and precision imaging enable us to tailor treatments to each patient's unique needs, improving survival rates and quality of life.

“Our goal is to make these cutting-edge treatments accessible to all, enhancing cancer care for everyone,” he said.

According to the statement, one in nine Malaysian men and one in 10 Malaysian women are at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime.
