ASEAN VARSITY GAMES: NATIONAL SWIMMERS END CAMPAIGN WITH ANOTHER GOLD

SURABAYA, July 1 (Bernama) -- The national swimming camp delivered another gold medal on the final day of the event at the ASEAN University Games 2024 (AUG 2024) here today.

Of the six events the Malaysian swimmers took part in at the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) swimming pool today, it was Low Zheng Yong who struck gold in the men’s 200-metre (m) with a time of two minutes 08.48 seconds (s) as compatriot Liew Zheng Wye (2:10.23s) settled for silver.

The swimming camp also bagged three bronze medals on the final day of action at the pool.

The three bronze medals came courtesy of Bryan Leong Xin Rin (men’s 50m freestyle in 23.05s); Georgene Wee Ee Jern (women’s 200m butterfly in 2:23.96s); and the men’s 400m medley relay team (Terence Ng Shin Jian, Hii Puong Wei, Bryan and Tan Khai Xin in 3:58.54s).

This means the national swimmers landed nine golds, seven silvers and 16 bronzes throughout the six days of the competition.

Meanwhile, Lik Zhang Lye, Mukhriez Shah Mahmood Shah, Muhd Hafizuddin Zulkifli and Fahman Arasy Ayub contributed a silver medal in the men’s team chess event.

Malaysia also clinched three bronze medals in chess through Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa Azhar (women’s singles); Zhang Lye (men’s singles); and Puteri Munajjah, Chua Jia Tien, S. Nithyalakshmi and Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar (women’s team).

On Day Seven of the AUG 2024 tomorrow, all eyes will be on badminton, with Malaysia having four representatives in the final rounds.

Tomorrow will also see the start of the athletics programme and hopes are high that Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi will shine the brightest in the men’s 100m event.   

Malaysia remain in third place in the medal standings with a medal haul of 14 golds, 17 silvers and 27 bronzes, with Indonesia (70-56-37) leading the pack and Thailand (24-20-11) in second spot.
