KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- The Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations in Geneva celebrated this year’s National Day and Malaysia Day, highlighting the country’s continued commitment to multilateralism.

Hosted by the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN, Datuk Nadzirah Osman, the reception was held on Wednesday at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Headquarters.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including representatives from various UN agencies, international organisations, and the diplomatic community in Geneva.

The celebration was one of warm camaraderie, reflecting the rich cultural diversity and the shared values of peace, harmony, and mutual respect that Malaysia stands for.

In her welcoming remarks, Nadzirah emphasised Malaysia’s commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation.

“As we gather in the heart of International Geneva, the hub of global diplomacy, I am reminded of the shared responsibility we all bear in shaping the future of our world. In a time of unprecedented global challenges.

“I wish to reaffirm Malaysia’s unwavering dedication to enhancing cooperation with this esteemed international community,” she stated, according to a statement by the Mission.

She highlighted Malaysia's forward-looking vision under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which centered around the MADANI framework, guided by values such as sustainability, compassion and innovation.

She also underscored Malaysia’s contributions on the global stage through various multilateral platforms based in Geneva, the statement read.

Malaysia is in its final year of a three-year term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, where it has championed various human rights initiatives.

Malaysia also currently serves as the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation and recently completed its tenure as a member of the World Health Organisation Executive Board.

Looking ahead, Nadzirah shared insights into Malaysia’s future role, particularly its upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, where the country aims to lead efforts in fostering regional cooperation and advancing shared goals within the Southeast Asian region.

“The event was not only a celebration of Malaysia’s independence but also a reaffirmation of Malaysia’s strong commitment to the international community in Geneva.

“It served as a reminder of the enduring spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility, as well as fostering a global partnership to address common challenges and advance collective goals, in the true spirit of multilateralism,” it said.
